The hole shapes of seedling tray are mainly square and round. Generally, the square hole contains about 30% more matrix than the round hole, and the water distribution is more uniform, so the root system of seedlings is more fully developed.
The development and research of plug seedling began in 1971, and in recent years, it has been widely used for commercial seedling raising of vegetables and flowers in China. Seedling raising with plug is a new technology. The plug is divided into grids, with one seed in one hole when sowing and one plant in one hole when dividing seedlings.
播种在穴盘里，让幼苗在穴盘里生长，长大后再移入苗盆，或开沟分苗，或大田种植；播种于秧盘，将秧苗移入穴盘，长大后移入秧碗，或开沟分秧，或种植；这种方式一开始占地少，特别适合早春气温低的时候育苗，等外界气温升高后再转移到其他保护区育苗，可以降低取暖成本。如果没有种植较大的幼苗，可以直接用穴盘苗培育。
育苗，由于幼苗抗逆性增强，种植不损伤根系，如果幼苗裸根往往会影响成活率，而穴盘育苗属于带块移栽，所以大田种植后，幼苗延迟快，成活率高。
穴盘育苗以轻型基质和无土材料为基础。这些育苗基质具有比重轻、保水性强、根系不易分散等特点，适合长距离运输。穴盘苗重量轻，每株仅30 ~ 50克，是常规苗的6% ~ 10%。基础保水能力强，根系不易散开，可以保证苗木在运输过程中不枯死。
